Shell swaps are not custom. Painting a case is not custom. This is what custom actually means: stripped to bare PCB, rebuilt from the inside out with internal WS2812B lighting and a custom-programmed mini LCD display cycling animated logos in the cartridge window. One of one. Nobody else has this.
What Goes Into It
The core of this build is an N64 that’s been completely rebuilt. RGB mod on the video output. BlueRetro module for Bluetooth controller support. WS2812B LED strips inside the shell controlled by a custom ESP32-S3 running WLED firmware. And in the cartridge slot area — where most N64s just have an opening — there’s a small LCD display programmed to cycle through animated logo sequences.
The LCD jewel is the piece that makes it a one-of-one. It’s not a sticker. It’s not a decal over a light. It’s a working screen, custom-coded, running animations that aren’t available anywhere else because they were made for this specific build.
Why This Matters
The Bonus Life build is a demonstration of what’s possible with hardware that most people think is done. The N64 came out in 1996. The “custom” version of it that most people have seen is a different-colored shell from AliExpress. This is something else entirely — and it’s being given away.
