Bonus Life Stream 10 // BlueRetro Internal Bluetooth Mod — Soldering Under Microscope

An innocent question about how BlueRetro handles N64 save files turned into two hours under the microscope with a continuity tester and some very thin wire.

The Goal: BlueRetro Internal Mod on the Second Board

BlueRetro is open-source firmware for an ESP32 that puts Bluetooth controller support inside the console shell — no external dongles, nothing hanging out of a controller port. The N64 needs four data connections, one per controller port, pulled from the vias on the controller port traces.

The install diagram is out there. The problem: this specific board variant doesn’t match it.

Continuity Testing to Map the Real Pin Locations

Pulled out the continuity tester and mapped where the data pins actually land on this board. That took a while. Found all four. Once you know where they live on this variant, you’re not guessing anymore.

The Wire Problem — Stranded vs. Kynar

First attempt with stranded wire. Too thick. Doesn’t seat cleanly in those vias. Switched to Kynar solid-core wrapping wire — the same type used for wire wrapping in electronics work. Strip it with a thumbnail pull rather than wire strippers: you want almost nothing exposed, just enough length to tin the end and seat it in the via.

Four Connections Under the Microscope

Went through all four data connections under the microscope camera. Confirmed each one with the continuity tester before moving to the next — not moving on until the previous connection is solid. Pin three filled with solder in the process; heated the Kynar wire directly into the puddle and it confirmed clean on inspection.

Data connections done. Power and ground are still to connect. That’s the next session.

Pain was significant that night. Some of the worst streamed through. Gallbladder ultrasound is scheduled for Wednesday.
