Side Quest. The Diamond Rio Volt SP100 — the personal one from 2001 — needed attention.
What the Rio Volt Was
The Diamond Rio Volt is a portable CD player from the early MP3 era that could read MP3 files burned to a standard disc. The trick was cheap storage: a single CD held a lot more music as MP3 files than it did as uncompressed audio. Chip-based MP3 players existed before it, but they were expensive and held a few dozen songs. A Rio Volt let you carry a disc with two hours of audio for the cost of a blank CD.
The SP100 was a later revision of the SP90 — slightly better build, same core idea. If you had one in 2001 you were the person in your group with 150 songs in your pocket while everyone else was swapping discs.
The SP100 on the bench is the one from then. It is being repaired now.
Two Units, One Session
Both the SP90 and SP100 are on the bench. The SP100 is personal. The SP90 is a companion unit for comparison and parts reference. Two units from the same hardware generation, two different conditions, one stream to work through them both.
This is what the Side Quest format is for — hardware from the same era as the main build that deserves working again, taken care of between main Bonus Life sessions.
